Sooner or later, everybody goes down to hang around at the Zocalo

The inner circle is for children, it’s perfect for merry games of chase
Hear them shout ‘Bet you can’t catch me!’, round and round the bandstand they race
Parents sit on benches chatting, at the same time they keep half an eye
On their breathless, red-faced, yelling ninos - they wave as the kids go zooming by

The outer circle is for commerce, it spills out into the nearby streets
It’s for merchandise of every sort on offer, for the smell of roasting corn and grilling meat
For market stalls and bargaining and parley, for cafes and music playing loud
For teenage boys on motor scooters careening madly through the crowd
