A Phosphorescent Glow

When I was a child, lying in my bed at night,
I’d bring a clock beneath the covers, just to watch the light
I loved the ghostly greenish glowing of the hands and numbers
Mysterious and lovely, as I drifted into slumber

Ooo-oo-oo-oo that phosphorescent glow

‘Tick-tock, tick-tock’ said the clock, the years went passing by
My childhood enchantments had long been left behind
Then one Summer evening, I heard somebody say:
‘Let’s all go for a night swim in Tomales Bay’

And so we stumbled single file along a trail at night
Trying to keep the one in front of us in sight
A warm night, but moonless, no light to show the way
But at last there stretched before me the waters of the bay

I heard the others splashing and crying out with wonder
So I ran down to the water and eagerly plunged under
As I swam, my eyes beheld a strange but lovely sight
My limbs were trailed by sparkles of phosphorescent light
